What is eczema? Eczema is a chronic skin condition that affects the back of the ears, the arms, legs, cheeks and legs causing these body parts to itch terribly and swell.


This skin condition will induce redness, itching, swelling weeping, crusting and even scaling. Scratching the affected parts makes this skin condition worsen. This is caused by the use of chemical compounds such as detergents, cosmetics, perfumes, colognes, soaps and sometimes the ingestion or effect of an allergen. Food allergens are those like of tomatoes, wheat, dairy products, vinegar and corn.

In general, this skin condition can affect anybody though this is seen prevalent in infants and children. This condition is not gender oriented so men and women are affected equally. This skin condition is considered idiopathic but scientists believe that this may be affected by heredity and other environmental factors. Up to date there are no tests to diagnose the potential occurrence of this skin ailment.

With a shift to a healthy lifestyle, and proper skin care this skin condition may be treated effectively. When you show the symptoms of eczema try lukewarm baths with non-soap body cleaning agents, moisturizers, avoiding heat and use of clothing made of soft cotton fabric. There are also essential oil blends that can be used to help ease its symptoms.

Treatment for eczema

The best treatment for clearing and controlling eczema are:

  • Minimize stress
  • Avoid synthetically perfume, cologne and cosmetics
  • Follow a healthy diet
  • Find out what is your provoking skin sensitiveness and avoid those things

Essential oils for eczema

Aromatherapy can relieve eczema by decreasing stress, soothing and healing the skin, calming the inflammation.

The scientific director of the Pacific Institute of Aromatherapy, Kurt Schnaubelt, Ph. D. based in San Rafael, California recommends the use of lavender and palmarosa (both at 1 ml), 10 ml of calophyllum diluted in 6 teaspoons of Rose Hip seed oil is effective in treating eczema.

This blend may be applied topically on the affected area to up to 3-4 times in a day until the manifestations subsides. This blend will help in relieving itching and promote cell repair.

On a different eczema type like weeping eczema may be treated with the blend of thyme and eucalyptus citiriodora (both 1 ml), 6 teaspoon of Rose Hip Seed oil and 10 ml of calophyllum. This is used similar to that of dry eczema.

The best essential oils to use in treating eczema are as follows:

  • Cedarwood
  • Cypress
  • Chamomile
  • Patchouli
  • Rosemary
  • Tea tree
  • Thyme
  • Lavender

Before using any of these suggested essential oils it is best that you refer back with the safety guidelines for any contraindications.

It is normal to note that the eczema seem to worsen first before actual recovery starts. This is due to the efficacy of the essential oils used to exterminate the pathogen.

In treating this skin condition it is important to carefully monitor the eradication of the infection versus further damaging the affected area. Conventional methods of treatment will normally require that you take vitamin E supplement, moisturizers and soothing topical applications like lotion. The benefit of using essential oils in the treatment of this skin condition is that the blend is composed of potent antifungal, antimicrobial and disinfecting agents plus itÂ’s the moisturizing and soothing effect.

Make your own essential oils for eczema blend

To help control eczema, you can bath in Calming bath daily, Apply a skin compress to the affected areas daily, Several times each day you can apply body oil/cream to the affected areas to reduce inflammation and to promote healing.

Calming bath:

  • 1 cup cornstarch (optional)
  • 2 drops chamomile
  • 2 drops geranium
  • 1 drop elemi

Disperse all the ingredient in the bathtub with warm water and soak for 30 minutes.

Skin cooling compress:

  • 1 quart cool water
  • 2 drops chamomile
  • 1 drop helichrysum
  • 1 drop lavender

Pour the water into 2 quart of glass bowl and add the essential oils and blend. Soak a clean cotton cloth in the water and apply to the affected areas.

Ezcema Relief:

The blend of essential oils used for this treatment is packed with powerful natural components to draw out the pathogen of allergic factor causing this chronic skin reaction. This blend is composed of 10 drops of yarrow and cypress, 4 drops of tea tree oil and 10 drops of chamomile oil. The ingredients is simply mixed together and is placed in a dark glass container.

8-12 drops of this mixture may be added into your tub of bath water. If you do not have the time to soak you can just use when you shower. Place 5-7 drops of the blend in a cloth and lather this to your body after washing with a non-soap cleaning agent.

32 drops of this blend may be fused with 2 ounces of base lotion or 2 tablespoon of carrier oil for a massage.

Apply only a small amount to the affected area to up to 4-6 times in a day until the manifestations subside. It has been charted that relief is noted in a 7-10 day frame after the first use.

Eczema Soother:

For children age 3 and up with this skin condition, the Eczema Soother blend may be used. For those under the age of 3 you can substitute thyme with yarrow.

The formula for this is 14 drops of chamomile and 8 drops of each; geranium, patchouli, lavender, and thyme.

Mix all these components and store in a dark glass container.

For application you may add 8-12 drops of this blend to a tub of bath water. Place 5-7 drops of this blend on a piece of cloth and lather on your body after washing off the non-soap cleaning agent off of your body.

32 drops of this essential oil may be diluted in 2 ounces of base lotion or 2 tablespoon of carrier oil; those listed in the carrier oil section for eczema.

A minimal amount of this blend may be used to be applied on the affected area until to up to 4-6 times in a day. It may take up to 7-10 days until total relief is noted.
