Witch hazel or water?

by Dawn Demet

I want to know what is the benefit or not of using witch hazel over water? I'm thinking of body sprays or bath fizzies. I've been recipes that state either of these is ok but i want to know if there is a benefit to the witch hazel over water. Thank you

Hi Dawn,

Here are the uses of witch hazel:

An extract of Witch hazel is believe can reduce skin inflammation. Lab have shown that witch hazel extracts have weak anti-microbial activity, an after sun lotion contain witch hazel was shown to protect the skin from UV induced inflammation and redness.

Some studies in Japan shown that a witch hazel has an antioxidant properties. Witch hazel was one of two herb (the other one was horse chestnut) found to have strong free radical scavenging activity, The researchers conclude that this herb was likely a candidate for use in anti-aging and anti-wrinkle products for protecting the skin.

Alcohol extract from witch hazel appear to bring relief from different skin injuries such as hemorrhoids and bruises.

So it depends on what you want to achieve when you make your spray or fizzies? If you like to do outdoor activity, I suggest you make the spray with witch hazel. Cause it can protect your skin from UV.

I hope that helps,
