
Not long ago, I've received a question regarding sunburn treatment. With the coming of summer time, it is common for many people to expose their skin to the sun. While you are right to expose your skin with a moderate way, however, excessive exposure to sun can gives you more problems than to be healthy. And one of them is sunburn. Here are a few tips for treat sunburn.
Sunburn is a results when the amount of sun's exposure , or other ultraviolet light source , exceeds the ability of the body's protective pigment, melanin, to protect the skin.
Redness, pain, swelling, blistering and even fever can occur from this over exposure.
While sunburn is usually not immediately obvious, skin discoloration (ranging from slightly pink to severely red or even purplish) will initially appear from 1 - 24 hours after exposure.
The pain of sunburn is usually greatest between 6 and 48 hours after exposure. The burn can continue to develop for 24 - 72 hours after the incident. Peeling of the skin usually follows 3 - 8 days later.
When you have sunburn, here are a few action of first aid for sunburn treatment.
Apply cool water to the burned area first!
If you have lavender and tea tree essential oils, then you use neat on small areas which has redness of sunburn. Remember this is only for small areas, for large area such as you back, you'll have diluted it first. The Fatty oil that essential oils have may be disadvantage in using them neat, you'll have to dilute it with water.
To a 5 liter of water, add 5 drops of lavender or tea tree essential oils, shake vigorously. Smooth material, such as cotton handkerchief should be saturated with the lotion and applied to the burn. Repeat this treatment as soon as the cloth becomes dry.
This first aid of sunburn treatment will take out a lot of the heat and soothe sunburn skin.
After back to home, a tepid bath with an additional of lavender of tea tree essential oils will be a great help. Cool the affected area by placing it under running cold water.

There are several herbs that are well known for their ability to assist with sunburn relief, the most notable of which is Aloe Vera. Aloe Vera Gel may be used directly on sunburns for immediate relief of sunburned skin, to quicken the healing time, and it is especially soothing to the skin because of its high water content (99.5%).
For the best results, keep your Aloe Vera Gel in the refrigerator, this will increase its cooling effect upon the skin. Aloe Vera Gel is very mild and may be applied generously to the burned area as often as you would like. Adding Lavender, Calendula, or Chamomile essential oil will assist with the healing process, and adding a minimum amount of Peppermint essential oil will increase the cooling effect (Caution, Peppermint essential oil is very strong and too much will burn your skin).
Aloe Vera Skin Relief
Makes 4 ounces
Mix all ingredients, and apply to the skin as often as desired. Store in refrigerator to increase the cooling effect.

Lavender is notoriously beneficial for any type of burn, including sunburns. It offers immediate relief and healing, and may accelerate the healing process.
Lavender Healing Oil
Makes 4 ounces
Mix all ingredients in a bottle, and apply as needed. Perfect for using after an oatmeal or baking soda bath! Use this oil after the sunburn has begun to heal, applying a carrier oil to a fresh burn may increase the heat and discomfort.
There are 3 options for you to choose when you want to make sunburn spray. The first one using Lavender essential oils , the second one using peppermint essential oils and the third one using chamomile essential oils
Peppermint is very cooling to the skin, and therefore very beneficial for relieving sunburned skin. The essential oil may be added in small amounts to lotions and moisturizers, but be cautious as Peppermint essential oil is very strong and too much will irritate and burn your skin. Start with 1-2 drops, and see how your skin reacts.
Lavender Sunburn Spray
Fill a spray mist with lukewarm water then add a few lavender essential oils and spray over the redness of sunburn areas. It will bring immediate sunburn relief and can be repeated as often as required.
Peppermint & Green Tea Cooling Mist
Makes 4 oz
Make an infusion with the Peppermint and Green Tea leaves, then strain the mixture (to make an infusion: pour boiling water over herbs, cover, and allow to sit for 2-4 hours). Pour into a spray bottle, and spray directly on sunburn as often as desired. This recipe is also wonderful as a refreshing facial toner! Use within 1-2 days, or store in the refrigerator up to 1 week.
Chamomile After-Sun Spray
Makes 4 ounces
Mix all ingredients, pour into a spray bottle, and apply to the skin as often as desired. Store in refrigerator to increase the cooling effect.
