Stress Relief With Essential Oils

Several studies have been conducted to
determine its effectiveness on
stress relief using essential oils

By Nick Arrizza, M.D.

I report on several recent studies that assessed the potential use of essential oils in the alleviation of stress related conditions.

1. A significant study done by Atsumi, T and Tonosaki, K. (Department of Oral Physiology, Meikai University, School of Dentistry, 1-1, Keyaki-dai, Sakado-shi, Saitama 350-0283, Japan.) showed that inhaling lavender or rosemary essential oils for 5 minutes significantly reduced the levels of the hormone cortisol in saliva samples as well as significantly increasing the body’s natural free radical scavenging ability. Cortisol is a hormone that is normally elevated in stressful states. Additionally one finds elevated levels of tissue damaging “Free Radicals” in stress states. Free radical scavenging is the process by which the body “mops” up these dangerous chemicals and prevents tissue degeneration and reduces the risk of developing cancerous conditions.

2. In a study done by Hwang, JH from the Dept. of Nursing, Geochang Provincial College, Geochang-gun, Gyungnam, Korea. The researchers found that “an inhalation method using essential oils can be considered an effective nursing intervention that reduces psychological stress responses and serum cortisol levels, as well as the blood pressure of clients with essential hypertension.” The essential oils used in this study were a blend of lavender, ylang-ylang and bergamot used once daily for 4 weeks.

3. In a third study Hongratanaworakit, T, Buchbauer, G. Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Faculty of Pharmacy, Srinakharinwirot University, Nakhon-nayok 26120, Thailand. Reported that through the use of ylang-ylang essential oil absorbed through the skin their study group rated themselves as being calmer and more relaxed than the control group.
