Reflux

by Kris
(Baker City,Oregon)

Hi, my name is Kris and my 8 month old son has acid reflux.

The Doctor put him on zantac which did not seem to help a lot. Then put him on previcid, which made him throw up everything for 24 hours.

The doctor said it may have been a virus, but he did not have any other symptoms and he started getting sick 45 minutes after I gave him the previcid.

Now he is back on the zantac and half a dose of previcid. He is keeping his food down for the most part, but is still uncomfortable and still has some trouble with his reflux.

I don't want him to have to be on medicine if he doesn't have to. I am looking for an alternative to the medicines the doctor put him on.

Does anyone know if food allergies or sensetivities may possibly be the real cause of his reflux? Any ideas or where I might start?

Hi Kris,

First, let me tell you that I'm not a doctor so I think I don't know about all the medicine that you mention in your story.

For aromatherapy, I think I'll leave to Cristl to answer it.

I just want to share that I found a good book for acid reflux. If you haven't bought it, I think you should.

This book will provide practical advice about acid reflux. The author of this book is a father of 2 babies with acid reflux and also a pediatric gastroenterologist.

So this book is the answer on where do you start..

The book is called Colic Solved By Bryan S. Vartabedian, you can click here to see the table of content of this book.

And I have heard there are number of herbs that can be taken as tea to relieve acid reflux. But this treatment is usually for adult. The herbs are Chamomile, ginger and licorice.

Chamomile is known to have a soothing effect on digestive tract.

Ginger is another well known herb for digestive aid

Licorice has proven in several studies to increase the mucous coating of esophageal lining, helping it resist irritating effects of stomach acid.

But as I said before, I don't know if this can be applied to an infant.

I suggest you contact a herbalist if you want to know more about these herbs.

Hope that helps,
Liani

Reflux advice
by: Cristl Arndt

Hello,

I'm sorry to hear your baby is suffering with this. I saw on "Medical Mysteries" TV show (these are real cases) of a baby who couldn't keep anything down and the doctor called it "reflux". This went on for years, and the child was still sick, throwing up and not growing much. Finally, he had a barium test done and they found his stomach was situated somehow above his diaphragm, pinching his stomach off. He was born that way apparently. Surgery fixed the problem and he is now healthy. You may want to look into a more unusual cause for reflux in addition to the more common reasons, such as dietary. I hope you get the right diagnosis soon!

Hi Kris,

One more thought. Since reflux can be cause by so many different things, your child may also have a digestive enzyme deficiency or some other metabolic deficiency, which is not the same thing as having an allergy. All the best!

reflux causation
by: Anonymous

Your son's reflux could easily be caused by an allergic response to food, beverages, or an overall imbalance in his energy.

I would first rule out all possible factors that you have control over, meaning food and/or environmental constituents. Once you receive the test results adjust the child's dietary intake accordingly.

Before using any natural remedies you must first identify the source of your child's problem. Return to this blog with a results from your allergist and then you can rule out or remove external allergens that may be causing your son the reflux.

I have used essential oils with children for 14 years and have seen remarkable results but first rule out allergens which are easy to remove from the diet or environment.
