Making Perfume

by A. Thompson

I love your site, I am not able to leave my home very often so I wanted something creative to do, I love scents so I decided to try making perfume. My question is why can I not use water to mix oils with instead of alcohol, I thought that alcohol evaporated quickly. Your help is appreciated.

Using alcohol instead of water
by: Penny K.

Hi,

If you are making a "true" perfume you need to use Perfumers Alcohol. But in the USA we cannot sell alcohol unless we have a special license to sell alcohol. So the next best thing is to make your "perfume" using a carrier oil. The best oils for that are Fractionate Coconut Oil or Jojoba.

Although you can use water the problem with water is that unless you use it within 2-3 weeks the potential is there for the water part to become contaminated with bacteria or mold. Even though essential oils can inhibit the growth of bacteria, viruses and molds it has a hard time when they are diluted into water.

So the best answer for your inquirer is for them to use either the fractionated coconut oil or jojoba which have indefinite shelf life and won't grow any of the germs that could ruin the perfume.

Perfume using oil's recipe
by: Liani Widjaja

Hi,

You can also use grapeseed oil or jojoba oil. Both of them won't alter the essential oil's aroma and jojoba oil won't go rancid.

Here is the direction:

Combine 1 ounce carrier oil with 25 drops of your favorite essential oils, and put it in amber glass bottle.

HTH,
Liani
