Jojoba oil blends

by Linda W

I am new to essential oils and have a couple of questions about jojoba as a carrier oil.

1) How long do blends using jojoba as the carrier tend to keep before going rancid?
2) Is it necessary to refrigerate blends using jojoba as the carrier?

Thanks for your help,

Linda

Blending oils in Jojoba
by: Cristl Arndt

Hi Linda,

Once essential oils are diluted in a carrier, and it doesn't matter what the carrier is, I find that their therapeutic effects will last about 3 weeks. I don't recommend storing them in the refrigerator because the carrier may solidify. Certain essential oils will crystalize also. So long as they are stored in amber or cobalt bottles, with the cap on tight, they should be fine at room temperature.

It's so confusing . . .
by: Linda W

This is SO confusing, as everyone I ask (3 websites including this one, plus the manufacturer of my jojoba oil) has given me a different answer to this question. The manufacturer of the oil I use insisted that if blended with jojoba oil, essential oils will certainly change some over time but that they are still just as therapeutic and do not go rancid, due to the antioxidants in the jojoba oil. The person I spoke with said that their essential oil "expert" insisted that you basically didn't have to worry about any expiration date with essential oils, as long as you didn't blend them with anything but jojoba or coconut oil.

I was taught at my college that diluted essential oils in any carrier last about a month, but since I err on the side of wanting the best result, I remake the blend after 3 weeks. Therefore, I make very small amounts at a time, between 1-2 tbsp in dropper vials. I have no experience with jojoba, but I do know that with grape seed or sweet almond oil, my blends don't last long. After a month, they will still smell fine, but the therapeutic effects begin to fade. There are so many variables when blending essential oils, and some may last longer than others due to their unique chemistry. I encourage you to answer this question for yourself and see how well your essential oils hold up in jojoba. You will know if the diluted essential oil has lost its therapeutic use when it no longer does what you want it to.

Jojoba oils
by: liani widjaja

Hi Linda,

Cristl's answer is based on her experience while blending essential oils and her answer didn't mention about jojoba oil.

I will try to answer your question.

First, All carrier oils should remain fresh when blend with pure essential oils. A major concern when choosing carrier oil is how long they remain fresh. Of all carrier oil mentions, all of them are trigylceride oils, and will turn rancid eventually. Some will turn more quickly than others. Only jojoba oil is not trigylceride oils.

Jojoba oil is not an oil but it is known as wax ester and it does not go rancid, even in warm temperature. For this reason, many of herbalist use it to blend some expensive essential oils such as jasmine, rose or melissa. You may add jojoba oil to lengthen the life of other carrier oil.

High-quality jojoba oil is without color or smell.

For second question,
I don't think it is necessary to put the blends in refrigerator. as if it doesn't rancid in very warm temperature. and based on Cristl's answer, I do feel that certain essential oils will crystalize.

I hope that eliminate your confusion.

Have a great day
Liani

Thanks, everyone
by: Linda W

Thanks to everyone for your comments and advice. One thing I learned is that I must not have a high quality jojoba oil, because mine definitely has a slight odor before adding essential oils. Does this mean that it will not keep as long as high quality jojoba?

High Quality Jojoba oils
by: Liani Widjaja

Linda,

I do mention about high quality jojoba oil based on the book I read (Aromatherapy Handbook for Beauty, Hair, and Skin Care By Erich Keller).

On her book, she mention that jojoba oil it is effective only if it is not mixed with synthetic substances such like preservatives. Some commercial products does not use pure jojoba oils instead they use fermented jojoba flour or jojoba tincture which is cheaper but of course lose their effectiveness.

Therefore she suggest to use high quality jojoba oil.

IMO, a slightly or mild odor can be tolerate as pure jojoba oil.

Have a great day,
Liani Widjaja

no odor in my oil
by: Linda W

Thanks to my sister, I discovered that the jojoba oil I purchased has no smell as long as it is in the bottle, but as soon as I put a little on my fingers, it smells a little like bacon. My sister thinks the oil is reacting to something in or on my skin.

Thanks,
Linda
