History of Aroma Therapy



History of aroma therapy began with the Egyptians who used the method of infusion to extract the oils from aromatic plants to be used for healing purposes and also for embalming. During this time, certain plants were used for specific conditions, such as for cooking , specific herbs were used to help the digestive process and build the immune system. And after bathing , the Egyptians believed in being massaged with fragrant oils. They also used herbs to honor their god.

The use of aromatherapy spread from Egypt to Israel, China, India and the Mediterranean. Every culture, from the most backward to the most modern, developed own set of practices.

In China, history of aroma therapy marked with The Shen Nung's Herbal book which is the oldest surviving medical book in China and is dated about 2700 B.C. and contains information on over 300 different plants and herbs. The Chinese used aromatic herbs and burned aromatic woods and incense as a way of showing respect to God.

Ayurveda knows as traditional Indian medicine , has been practiced for over 3,000 years. The Greeks also continue to use Aromatic oils, along with many other countries and cultures.

History of aroma therapy and essential oils still continue until twentieth century, The word, aromatherapy, was first used in the 1920s by French chemist René Maurice Gattefossé, who devoted his life to researching the healing properties of essential oils after a lucky accident in his perfume laboratory. In the accident, he lit his arm on fire and thrust it into the nearest cold liquid, which happened to be a vat of lavender oil. Immediately he noticed surprising pain relief, and instead of requiring the extended healing process he had experienced during recovery from previous burns--which caused redness, heat, inflammation, blisters, and scarring--this burn healed remarkably quickly, with minimal discomfort and no scarring.

Soon the use of Aromatherapy spread, and it is now one of the most widely practiced natural forms of healing all over the world. Which provide cure and relief for a number of complications both physical and spiritual.

Drawing from what was used in ancient times,The Aromatherapy of today is a blend of the different cultures and is enjoyed by many people all over the world.

Today, aromatherapy is one of the most popular of all complementary therapies, offering a wide range of highly effective treatments to both the acute and chronic stages of illness and disease. At the same time, regular use of aromatherapy treatments and home-use products can help to strengthen the immune system, thereby establishing a preventative approach to overall health.
