General anesthesia and essential oils




Hi,
I've been using a hair blend lately and I love the results. I'll be having a surgery next month under general anesthesia and I'm wondering if I should stop massaging my scalp with essential oils for now since I know most essential oils thin the blood.

Hi,

The only essential oil you may have to be concerned about is Immortelle (Helichrysum italicum), so unless that is in your blend, you probably don't have to stop using it. Immortelle helps break down blood clots for hemorrhoids and is contraindicated if you are taking anti-coagulant medications.

I'm not certain if it is strong enough to actually thin the blood systemically, but it must be strong enough to warrant not using it if you are taking that particular type of medication.

If you aren't sure if the blend contains Immortelle, then I'd advise you to stop using it 3 days prior to your surgery, and continue when it is safe to do so after surgery (per doctor's orders).

Hi,

Thanks Cristl for your advice.

I do agree with you to discontinue the use of essential oils 3 days before the surgery.

But if you use the hair blend for a long term already, Best I think if you can do this 1 week prior the surgery. This can eliminate the essential oils (if use in long term) from the liver and kidneys.
