Getting someone to quit smoking is one of the hardest things to do. But some people are saying that aromatherapy can provide a positive influence when you are trying to stop smoking.


Aromatherapy, with the help of essential oils, can change moods and can induce a feeling of calm that help relieve some of the effects of nicotine addiction.

Some say that when craving for a cigarette, one can inhale some essential oil blends to help alleviate the need to smoke.

How Aromatherapy Can Help

There is no one product that can actually make you quit smoking. Quitting is something that you ultimately have to determine yourself. The process of getting rid of the habit is just aided by several methods, with aromatherapy being one of them.

Aromatherapy can help you with the cravings that make you want to keep on smoking. Cravings are those strong desires that your brain sends out to make you continue on smoking. By blocking these cravings, you end up blocking the desire to smoke.

A few recent researches have been successful in exhibiting the beneficial of aromatherapy and essential oil in the process of quitting smoking.

The use of aromatherapy was done in a smoking cessation program.

A study was done at the University of Pittsburg where aromatherapy was found to stimulate the brain through the smell organ which reduced the craving for smoke resulting in the reduced urge to smoke.

Reducing the Effects of Nicotine with Essential Oils

To reduce the effects of nicotine using aromatherapy, a blend of essential oils can be made to your liking.

Inhaling a blend of aromas can help you block the cravings of smoking cigarettes.

The smell of certain essential oils works by the scent travelling to your brain’s olfactory nerve. From there, the scent goes to the limbic system, which controls your cravings.

Recommended Essential Oils to Quit Smoking

Black pepper essential oil has also been studied as one aroma that can help ease cravings. You can use black pepper essential oil in a diffuser or you can place a few drops on a cloth and sniff it when cravings start to bother you.

Lavender essential oil can calm you down when your nerves are becoming agitated from smoking withdrawals. You can burn aromatherapy candles infused with lavender or even add them to your bath water and shampoo.

Individual essential oils to quit smoking like peppermint, cinnamon or nutmeg can also come in handy. You can inhale the aromas to help block the craving of smoking a cigarette. Pine mixed with thyme and ylang-ylang essential oils can also help curb cravings.

Another essential oils to quit smoking are sweet marjoram, palmarosa, frankincense, and rose germanium (Pelargonium roseum asperum) . These essential oils are usually used for smoking cessation.

To use these essential oils singly. You can place 3 to 5 drops in 2 cups of water in an aromatherapy oil burner

or by simply infusing a handkerchief with the scent and inhaling the aroma when a craving strikes. This helps relieve anxiety, stress, restlessness, nervousness and the withdrawals of nicotine.

Blends of Essential Oils to Quit Smoking

Method 1:

You can blend 5 drops of rosemary, 5 drops of lemon, 3 drops of peppermint, 3 drops of ylang-ylang and 1 drop of camphor and diffuse the mixture via an oil burner. This particular mixture not only helps in curbing the cravings but is also an energizing and relaxing mixture.

Method 2:

  • Helichrysum – detoxifies tobacco
  • Black pepper – inhalation of this vapor helps in nicotine withdrawal

Both these essential oil needs to be clubbed while using. You can also make use of other essential oils like lime, lemon, grapefruit and orange which are also beneficial in alleviating the desire for smoke.

All you have to do is, take a few deep breaths from the bottle of essential oil and your crave for smoke is gone. This method is found more beneficiary as you can carry the essential oil everywhere along with you.

Some essential oils to quit smoking may work well for some people but not have much of an effect on you. Try to explore and make your own blend until you find that one recipe that helps you curb the cravings and stop smoking altogether.
