Studies about Essential Oils that Help Labor

Pictures of Pregnancy Essential Oils that Help Labor

The use of essential oils in childbirth has not been given enough scientific merit regarding its benefit to the mother and the midwife as well. It is believed that this is due to the tests being run and essential oils are used in uncontrolled amounts.

The first study trying to define the correlation of essential oils to childbirth utilized 585 women. The essential oils used are lavender, clary sage, jasmine, frankincense, chamomile, mint, eucalyptus, lemon and mandarin.

Few of the formula and combination of essential oils are those like used during parturition applied through spray with a solution of 2 drops of essential oil to a 100 ml of water over a face flannel, bean bag or pillow. For baths they used 4-6 drops. For foot baths they used 2-4 drops and a drop on an absorbent card used for inhalation. Also an undiluted essential oil, peppermint, was applied on the forehead and then on the palm with frankincense

It was also claimed that Lavender is estrogenic that is useful in inducing calm in times of uterine contractions and will also aid in resting. Clary sage is a good conditioner prior to labor. The study did not identify which specie of the used essential oils are used the substances are derived from; lavender, peppermint, eucalyptus, chamomile and frankincense. This shows the bias in the study and the disbelief to get a credible result since even the chemical composition was not determined either.

There was a second study conducted subsequent to the latter. The subjects 8058 mothers in gestation during childbirth and the goal was to be able to show aromatherapy’s effect in easing pain, anxiety, nausea, vomiting or inducing stronger contractions. The information derived form the study was compared to those not given essential oils as intervention of approximately 15799 in number.

It showed that 50% of those administered with essential oils testified they find it beneficial while 14% stated it had no effect at all. Those in the group that used aromatherapy have showed a decline in the use of pethidine ranging from 6% to 0.2%.The group also showed that potentially use of aromatherapy may have contributed to stronger uterine contractions in women that had dysfunctional labor. According to scientific records the administration of essential oils showed reduced uterine contractions.

It is not credible judgment to confirm whether uterine contractions are strengthened or not. The same goes for the length of labor if shortened or not. It was unfortunate that the aromatherapy group was not present with the control group at the time the tests were done. Additionally, it was believed that the results were affected by a placebo effect resulting to a question in the credibility of the data generated.
