There are many critics who say that you should never use any Essential oils for pregnancy, while others say that it is perfectly safe. With so many different opinions on the subject, it is no wonder that pregnant women get confused.

Depending on what aromatherapist you talk to or what aromatherapy book you read, essential oils is either a blessing or bane for pregnant women. If you personally doubt about it, just leave it out.

But I think many essential oils for pregnancy can be quite useful in helping the prospective mother relieve the pain during pregnancy.

If you do decide to use aromatherapy during your pregnancy, please make sure you are under the guidance of a qualified aromatherapist. This to ensure you have great benefits during your pregnancy.

In order to use essential oils for pregnancy safely, a few extra safety guidelines will need be followed:

Never take essential oils internally. Always dilute essential oils before applying them to the skin.

If you are pregnant, adapt any recipes by cutting down half of dozes. This will softens the effect and when pregnant, a woman's sense of smell is often more acute, so full strength may seem overpowering. For example if a recipe suggests 5 drops in 10 mls of carrier oil, then use only 2-3 drops.

Essential oils used in vaporiser will carry much less risk than any applied directly to the body, whether in a carrier oil, in a bath or as a compress. But still depend how & how much you use.

Always ensure that you use pure essential oils.

It is important to take note that using essential oils during the first trimester of pregnancy can create medical complications. Except for the morning sickness remedy below, avoid the use of aromatherapy until the fourth or fifth month to avoid any problems.

  • Ginger
  • Neroli
  • Tea tree
  • Ylang Ylang

Commonly used oils which are normally safe but may have adverse effects when pregnant. These include cedarwood, citronella, marjoram, myrrh, rosemary, rose, clary sage and peppermint.
