Depending on what aromatherapist you talk to or what aromatherapy book you read, essential oils is either a blessing or bane for pregnant women. If you personally doubt about it, just leave it out.

In order to use essential oils for pregnancy safely, a few extra safety guidelines will need to be followed:

Never take essential oils internally. Always dilute essential oils before applying them to the skin.

If you are pregnant, adapt any recipes by cutting down half of dozes. This will soften the effect and when pregnant, a woman's sense of smell is often more acute, so full strength may seem overpowering. For example if a recipe suggests 5 drops in 10 mls of carrier oil, then use only 2-3 drops.

Essential oils used in vaporiser will carry much less risk than any applied directly to the body, whether in a carrier oil, in a bath or as a compress. But it will still depend how & how much you use.

Always ensure that you use pure essential oils.

It is important to take note that using essential oils during the first trimester of pregnancy can create medical complications. Except for the morning sickness remedy below, avoid the use of aromatherapy until the fourth or fifth month to avoid any problems.
