Aromatherapy for Headache


Here are some guidelines on using aromatherapy for headache.

Headaches are something we don’t want to have, but due to some causes in our daily lives we still deal with severe headaches or migraines. Headache are caused by many conditions. According to International Headache Society, there are 2 main categories, like Tension headache and headache cause by another conditions such as an injury, high blood pressure, infection and tumor.

Some kind of foods may also cause you sever headaches, and when you notice that, you can instantly know that you should change your lifestyle, and eat normally from now on, or maybe just eat other food than the food causing your headache. Coffee, alcohol and cigarette smoke or other smoke may also cause you a headache.

If we talk about migraines, then we have another type of a headache. Migraines are mostly caused by excess blood in your head. These migraines involve a severe headache, on both sides, and may even cause vomiting. Most of the time, you can avoid a headache with a good sleep over the night, but that doesn’t always work if you have a migraine.

Migraines are many times caused by allergies. These allergies include food allergies and environmental allergies. Whatever may cause a headache may also cause a migraine, mostly caffeine, alcohol and stress.

When we deal with tension headache, it is best to use Peppermint essential oils. Analgesic oils like peppermint oils have the best results. If you spread peppermint oil on your forehead, it will reduce or even eliminate your pain in maximally 15 minutes.

Other essential oils that are very helpful in preventing or easing headache are:

  • Basil
  • Chamomile
  • Coriander
  • Clary Sage
  • Eucalyptus
  • Ginger
  • Lemon
  • Marjoram
  • Melisa
  • Rosemary
  • Rosewood
  • Thyme

One study show that a 10% dilution of peppermint oils spread across the forehead and temples was as effective as 1000 mg of paracetamol and significantly reduced head pain after 15 minutes.

Aromatherapy for Headache Method Application

  • Inhalation from the tissue
  • Strong dilution around 5-10% used on your forehead and temples
  • Gentle massage around around neck, shoulder and head with peppermint and rosemary roll on

Peppermint Pain Reliever

Put 6 drops of peppermint oil mix with 1/2 ounce of carrier oil in a clean container. You can use it as much as you can, but please avoid the eye area.

Ice Migraine Compress

Pour 1 quart of ice cold water to a bowl, add 1 drop ginger oil and 1 drop peppermint oil. Soak a clean cloth and place it on your head or neck at the first sign of migraine. Please make sure do not letting the compress into contact with your eyes..

Headache Bath Relief

Mix 2 drops of each chamomile, marjoram and lavender essential oils plus 1 drop of clary sage and coriander. Disperse the blend in the bath tub fill with warm water. soak for 20 to 30 minutes. You can repeat it as necessary.

Tension Ease Massage Oil

Place 3 drops of marjoram, 2 drops of lavender and 2 drops of chamomile and 1 drop helichrysum into 1 ounce carrier oil. Mix the blends and massage to your tense area. you can repeat it as necessary
