What is aromatherapy and anxiety?

Anxiety is a psychological state that induces a feeling of fear, uneasiness and worry in the presence of or the absence of stress.



If the level anxiety increase, it may develop to a disorder that shows multitude of symptoms such as difficulty in sleeping, always worried, fatigue and angst. An anxiety disorder could potentially be a symptom for other health problems related to one's mental state like when a person is depressed.

The psychological symptoms can include: insomnia, feeling worried, tired and anger. Excessive anxiety is often associated with other mental health problems, such as depression.

Aromatherapy is about using essential oils that will provide the therapeutic benefit to a person suffering from anxiety.

How are aromatherapy and anxiety connected?

Aromatherapy is relevant to the treatment of feelings associated with anxiety. With this very notable property it has been used to help ease the symptoms and many other related cases. The use of essential oils that has attributes of calm and tranquility will condition the mind to focus more on the scents and so tension is released.

Also the same effect may be achieved when enforced with a massage. The pressure on tense muscles and the conditioning effects of the essential oil used will promote clarity in thought and stress-relief.

How To Use Aromatherapy For Anxiety Relief.

Some of recommended essential oils aromatherapy for anxiety are:

  • Chamomile - This essential oil promotes calm and tranquility that helps ease stress levels, temperament and even depression.
  • Petitgrain - This is a very good for panic attacks as it promotes calm as well.
  • Ylang ylang - This essential oil when used helps regulate and lower adrenaline levels with the result decreasing stress level as well

Appropriate aromatherapy for anxiety blends may be qualified based on their application:

For Massage. The preferred blend is a drop of ylang ylang, 2 drops of chamomile and 3 drops of petitgrain in 15 ml of carrier oil preferably sweet almond oil.

For Oil Burner. you can use same formula but do not dilute in carrier oil

For Bath. A preferred combination of the abovementioned oils may be combined with Bath salts. The preferred bath salts to use for this combination are Dead Sea Salt or Epsom salt. Dead Sea Salt evokes calm so reducing anxiety and promotes clarity of thought and tranquility. Epsom Salt on the other hand can help ease pain (limbs, muscles and back pain).

People who are subject to high-level expectation of work done are prone to anxiety. Most of the current occupations in the economy are of this nature either those involving physical strain of those that requires higher order thinking. By conditioning your mind to be prepared to take on these workloads make sure to acknowledge the fact that there will be mistakes done along the way. With this in mind you are able to protect yourself from the effects of stress. Stay on top of things and when things get on top of you step back and clear your thought, aromatherapy will help you with this.

Other essential oils can be used for anxiety

Essential oils bring calmness and balance without negative side effects. Essential oils used are :

  • lavender
  • frankincense
  • clay sage
  • bergamot
  • Melissa
  • vetiver
  • sandalwood
  • Roman chamomile

Aromatherapy and anxiety blend recipes.

Another way of relaxing and getting rid of anxiety is through massage. The feeling of your body being massaged gently helps to relieve tension and can leave you feeling very refreshed. A preferred blend of essential oils may be used to achieve the most favorable effect in administering aromatherapy through a massage. You can add six drops of each clary sage and orange essential oil, three drops of frankincense then mixed in an ounce of carrier oil to increase volume.

For Relaxing Bath :

You can add 10 drops of Roman Chamomile to a hot bath for a relaxing and soothing bath. Soak for at least 20 minutes to have a maximum benefit.

For Massage, you can try one of these blends:

Blend # 1 for massage:

  • 2 tablespoons Almond Oil
  • 12 drops Lavender Essential Oil
  • 6 drops Ylang Ylang Essential Oil
  • 4 drops Frankincense Essential Oil
  • 3 drops Clary Sage Essential Oil

Blend # 2 for massage:

This blend can be applied after you take a relaxing bath.

  • 1 tablespoon Apricot Oil
  • 5 drops Lavender Essential Oil
  • 3 drops Ylang Ylang Essential Oil
  • 2 drops Bergamot Essential Oil

Aromatherapy and anxiety blend for air diffuser or oil burner:

These blends can create a relaxing and calming environment. You can relax and play your favorite music.

Blend # 1 for calming anxiety

  • 3 drops bergamot essential oils
  • 2 drops lavender essential oils
  • 1 drops frankincense

Blend # 2 for calming anxiety

  • 2 drops bergamot essential oils
  • 2 drops lavender essential oils
  • 2 drops Roman Chamomile

In aromatherapy, as with any primary or complementary therapy, the benefits will vary between individuals. From my experience, I consider it well worth a try.
